  1. Shabana

Absolutely wonderful coat. The fabric is beautiful. I’m a size 8 and the size 6-8 fits perfectly with room for a jumper underneath but a really flattering, non-bulky fit. The sleeves are nice and slim and the correct length so that they will cover a watch to keep it protected from the rain. The straight cut is a big advantage if you are tired of macs which have an A-line and generally don’t flatter your legs at all. The belt allows for you to have less of a straight look.
The pockets have zips and are to the side so the front of the coat looks really nice and sleek. The material is soft and does not look or feel anything like the typical waterproof material you get on outerwear. I like the updated version of the mac which has a zip-up front instead of buttons. I got the dark grey and the colour is exactly like the photos. Love that the hood can be removed – tucking it away would really take away from the aesthetic of the coat and it easily just zips on and off, with the zip hidden.
A really versatile piece that is easy to dress up or down. I’ll certainly be looking at getting it in black or sandstone next.

  2. Helen (verified owner)

Whilst the material is lovely and the coat seems well-made, I wouldn’t recommend this coat because there seems to be an issue with the cut of the flaps on the front of the coat which constantly curl out and reveal the not very attractive underside of the fabric (it is not lined). This is extremely annoying and as I have missed the deadline for returning the coat, I will be donating it to a charity shop. In addition the coat is cut very straight and is not that flattering when worn – a more A-line cut would have been better.

-Smart fashionable look (Compliments every wear)
-Functional waterproof fabric technology (i am dry!)
    -Draw string on hood
-Long sleeves reaches base of thumbs (my arm span is about 5ft9)
    -Adjustable cuffs
-Snap button on belt so it stays put (genius)

    -Small hood
    -Small coat loop
    -Straight cut

Hood is not very big, i want it to come a little forwards as i have to bend my head to make sure rain doesn’t get on my face/glasses. Might not be ideal for small Afros, long bulky hair and bulky braids and/or large heads. Since it’s removable i’m thinking you could sell different sized removable hoods? i am very willing to buy one! This is the only niggling con.

Coat loop is too small meaning it’s not versatile for most hooks except the tiny metal ball head ones, on others jacket has to be hung by hood, not sure if it will damage lining in the long run.

Straight cut (not much of a con) but you could make the jacket slightly more feminine with a gentle A-line cut?

All in all, i’m very pleased when it’s raining and i have this on hand, it rained the day after i received this and i was very excited to wear it and i’ve worn it more than a handful of times now..or two handfuls.

I am a dress size 8 and get size 10 jackets for my wide shoulders. i got the size 10-12 because the 8-10 might have been okay with one layer but may not two.

  4. Ioana (verified owner)

I got the Burgundy color and I absolutely adore it. The Mac is super light weight and comfortable, most definetely waterproof and keeps me warm without the need for additional layers (so far tried it in 15 degrees Celsius temperature).

What can I say that hasn’t already been said? Only this; my beautiful black Mac arrived and I was so impressed with the quality, detail and fit that I promptly ordered a green parka and white city walker to complete my year round wardrobe – extravagant and my credit card has taken a bashing but these are the jackets I have been searching for for ever! Black Mac had its first outing yesterday and spent 40 minutes in torrential rain. I simply shook it off and both it and I were bone dry as if we’d never been outside 🙂 Thank you Protected Species!

  6. Tanja (verified owner)

Got this in sandstone. Fits beautifully and feels so light and yet fully protects from the rain and drops in temperature. I have the parka too in blue and have been wearing them every day. Absolutely everyone has commentrd on how beautiful the coats are. Also they really are easy to clean – such a relief!! The best coats I’ve ever bought.

  7. Alison (verified owner)

Having bought, and loved, the parka last year, I wanted a slightly “smarter” coat for work to wear over my suits.

I’ve had my mac for a few weeks now and whilst I like it, I don’t love it in the way I do my parka.

The issue is the hood, which, for me, makes it feel like a school coat when I’m wearing it. It’s detachable but then you need to carry it in your bag and try and attach when it starts to rain which is a faff so I invariably wear it attached. If it could be hidden away, like the parka hood, then I’d love it but as it is, it’s becoming a necessity wear rather than a preferred wear. Such a shame.

As others say, fit, quality etc is great. It’s just that detachable hood …

    • Anne Muir (verified owner)

Hi Alison, Thanks for the comments – unfortunately the neck of the Mac doesn’t allow us to have a fold away hood, construction-wise it’s very difficult…but we appreciate the feedback and it is noted.

I purchased the mac for a trip to New York. The weather was bitterly cold there in April and I took a quilted liner from another coat and wore it under the mac which worked brilliantly. I bought the storm grey colour which goes with everything and love it. Brilliant for travelling as it folds up to next to nothing and doesn’t get creased.

  9. Mandy Doyle (verified owner)

Having purchase a green PS Parka, I felt that it was too nice to wear to work and as an estate agent, I wanted something a bit more ‘business like’. My fashion sense outside of work is quite sporty and relaxed, something which the parka ticked all the boxes on. I knew that the fabric on the coat wouldn’t disappoint with regards to keeping me warm, cool and dry – whatever the weather. So I decided to go for the PS Mac in storm grey. The classic cut is lovely. I’m out in all weathers and Bath is a hilly city. I can cover many miles in my heels in 1 day and the last thing I want is to turn up at a viewing all hot and sweaty OR drenched from the British weather. I love the belt, which just makes it that much smarter. As with the parka, the cut for the taller lady is fab. The sleeves are long and the length is perfect. In a rainstorm I am always bone dry and on a spring day I am cool. Its also light enough to carry or fold up and pop in my bag when the sun does eventually shine. All hail the PS Mac!

As a rule I don’t order clothes or shoes over the Internet, but when I read the Evening Standard article and its praise of this coat, I just knew that I must have it!
I loved the colour right away, but in reality it looks even better than on the screen. It truly was love at first sight, twice over … first when I spotted the coat through the eyes of the Evening Standard’s praise and then for certain when I opened the box that delivered the Mac to Luxembourg a mere two days after I’d placed my order!!!
Currently the two of us are enjoying a weekend in London, our first extended outing together, and while I cannot comment on the “waterproof” qualities – the past two days have been dry and mainly sunny – I feel like a perfectly protected species. “We” even received compliments for our smart and cool look. 🙂
The fit is picture perfect and while I am just over the moon, there is one certain little detail that deserves special mention: the tie belt that comes with stud fastening to the rear (to avoid loss) … or generally the belt developing a mind (and life) of its own.
in short: the coolest and mos stylish Mac I’ve ever owned, I guess even being caught in a real heavy downpour won’t be such an ordeal while safely wrapped up it it.
Thank you so much for this fabulous garment and keep up your excellent work.
Luxembourg may be but a tiny country but you have one truly addicted customer there. 🙂

This is my 4th purchase and they just keep getting better and better. I bought my first mac in 2014 and it’s still going strong. I decided I wanted to try the new colour Storm and it’s lovely very unusual colour. There have been some changes to the Mac design and they are really good, the tie belt, more fitted hood etc are all welcome changes. The core quality hasn’t changed, still sits really well while still being fully waterproof and able to handle what ever the Scottish weather throws at it.

  12. Nina

The best coat I have ever bought. Where have you been all my life!!!! Day one I am in love. Chucked it down on walk to nursery with buggy today in usual work dress and still felt dry but smart. Yes there might be marginally trendier designs on the high street BUT honestly there has been SO much thought put into the design of this coat, it is super.

  13. Suzanne Lyons

My mac has just arrived, it fits perfectly and I’m delighted with it. I originally bought the size S and exchanged it for a L. Anne couldn’t have been more helpful and kept me posted at all times. Thank you

  14. Emma (verified owner)

I’m really disappointed! I have been looking at these coats for a few months now, and decided to get one for my birthday. From the reviews, and the price point, I had high expectations. There’s nothing wrong with the coat, it does fit nicely, but I was just so underwhelmed with it. It just looks totally ordinary. Maybe my expectations were too high!

  15. emilyfalconeruk (verified owner)

Wow!! My white mac arrived today and its fabulous. Great fit, wonderful attention to detail and excellent quality. Totally in love with it! Can’t wait to purchase the City Walker when it’s back in stock. I will be spreading the word about this awesome brand. Keep up the great work!

  16. PvD (verified owner)

Have had my Mac for over a year or so now and still very happy with it – stylish enough to wear to work but the performance of a sports jacket. Fab for airplane travel – breathable and stretchy. Am here to get another one :-). Only feature I would like to add is a 2 way zipper – please consider doing this, it would stop the jackets from bunching up when riding or biking!

  17. Suzie (verified owner)

After months of searching, found the perfect coat, stylish and different from the crow. Fabric feels lovely and will keep me warm w/o over-heating and, of course, dry!
Great customer service: brochure and fabric samples sent v quickly; sent me 2 sizes to try and no postage to return the unwanted coat; free TechWash samples and helpful advice on how to look after the garment. Proper customer service – Thank You

  18. Anne

I’d been looking for a smart mac with a hood for a good few years before I stumbled across this brand. This was EXACTLY what I was looking for. I have worn it in all weathers – it’s light enough for summer wear without making me overheat, even when walking fast, but teamed with warmer under layers, worked for me during the winter too. It has kept me dry in some torrential downpours (water literally pouring off the front of the hood – I was out in it for 20 minutes plus on this occasion and dry as a bone when I took the coat off!!)
I’d recommend to anyone who commutes on foot. I was almost put off by the price, but can confirm now that after a year of almost constant wear, it was worth every penny!
Oh – and their customer service team are also great, friendly and helpful – which is sadly an unusual phenomenon these days.

  19. Evelina

Lovely waterproof black trench, looks smart on. Very light but warm, however the nude coloured lining makes it look a bit cheaper than it is. Would much better preferred if it was black too.

  20. Julie (verified owner)

I have just bought the mac version and I have never seen such attention to detail. It is so comfortable and looks gorgeous. I love the fact the hood is detachable and can be stowed in a pocket. My only complaint is I would love a really bright colour – purple ideally! Customer service is fantastic too.

  21. Susan Sparkes (verified owner)

Just wore my new waterproof black trench to work this morning, on my bike. Absolutely amazing! I almost want it to rain in order to fully road test it, but couldn’t resist a quick road test this morning in cold but bright weather. Usually short sleeves (merino top) under a coat as light as this feels, my arms would be too cold at 6 deg, but I was just right temperature wise, and didn’t overheat. I wore with my usual bright red scarf and the whole combo looked really smart on my commute and walking into work. I may finally have found the holy grail of a smart waterproof coat that works on the bike, for which I have been searching for years.

The only thing I would add for future iterations is either an internal pocket (though it might spoil the lines) or a zip to one of the front pockets, under the flap. The pockets are quite deep but I keep my Travel Pass in there (I do a multi mode commute with a Brompton).

  22. Fiona Mackinlay

At last, a stylish waterproof and windproof Mac! It looks smart to wear to the office or on the school and nursery run. Rebecca was an absolute star helping me try different sizes until I happily found the size 3 fitted me perfectly (I’m normally a size 12). Now I need to save my pennies for the city walker jacket! The customer service I received was absolutely top notch.

  23. Tracy Scott (verified owner)

I’ve had my mac for almost 2 years now and it looks new despite frequent use. It is lightweight, waterproof, stretchy with a lovely texture. This Mac folds up into a small space yet does not crease. Great for travels and very versatile. Highly recommended.

  24. Nicola Briggs

This Mac has been the Best Buy of my life! We have had non stop rain here for weeks and I have worn my Mac every day and am loving it. It is stylish, practical and easy to wear. A fantastic coat!

  25. Julie W

Had my parka for a couple of years – I live in it! Thank goodness for the Nicwax rejuvenating treatments working a treat. Received many complements, no-one believes that it is a high performance garment because it’s just too stylish. Loving the expanded colour palette, just need to decide on which style next. Keep up the good work Protected Species.

I have been searching for a mac like this for years!!! I’m so very happy with my stylish, versatile mac. It has proven to be waterproof, warm and such a good fit, with lovely little details. I even had a complete stranger ask where I bought it from.

I have been searching for a Mac like this for years. I’m so very happy with my stylish and versatile Mac. It has proven to be waterproof, warm and such a good fit with lovely details. I even had a complete stranger ask where I had bought it from.

  28. Murkorama

Lovely rain mac to wear all year round. It’s light but cosy and keeps me dry in our erratic climate. A year on and it still looks brand new.
I was unsure about sizing and so contacted the company who couldn’t have been more helpful.
    Would recommend without hesitation!

  29. Jillian (verified owner)

I am very happy with my Cityscape Blue mac. It’s warm and stylish – just what I was looking for! I can dress it up or down. I am very impressed by how warm it is and I love the waterproof fabric.
    Would definitely recommend!

  30. E (verified owner)

Super happy with my Blue Mac – it’s not too bright or electric thankfully and the material is soft and doesn’t feel like a raincoat. Have yet to use it in the rain but I’m sure it’s perfectly fine.
I wanted something lightweight, waterproof and stylish and suitable for the current warm winter to take the kids to school and work . This checklist proved difficult to fulfil with brands sold in department stores and the high street. Thankfully (strangely) I found a recommendation for this brand on one of the mum sites and am glad I did!

  31. Rachel Hughes

Love my mac. Its stylish and flattering, comfortable AND waterproof. Just what every working/rugby/football Mum needs!

  32. Helen Cadogan (verified owner)

I absolutely love my Mac. I bought it in blue which is a change from my usual black and have received lots of comments from work colleagues. It’s been up to the challenge of recent heavy rain and kept me lovely and dry. The rain just beads on it. I don’t fasten the belt as the zip and buttons are enough for me. The fabric is so soft and smooth. In summary – it’s fab!

  33. Wilma D (verified owner)

I bought the Mac in blue. The colour is lovely, smart but a bit different. I have worn it in wind and heavy rain and it has kept me warm and dry. It really is wind and waterproof without looking as though I’m off hillwalking. I love the fact that it feels soft and lightweight – none of the noisy rustling you get with many waterproof jackets. I am a size 10 and the small fits perfectly. On cold, wet winter days I have worn it with an extra layer and it’s been perfect. Overall, probably the best raincoat I have ever had – what’s not to love!

  34. Janice Lynn (verified owner)

Bought the Mac in Black and wore it while in New York. I’m delighted as it is light weight, fully waterproof and warm at the same time. It looks chic and I’ve continued wearing it since coming home and am now thinking of purchasing another. All in all a superb buy and well worth the money.

  35. Louise (verified owner)

I love my new mac. Was in desperate need of a smart jacket for walk to work that kept me warm and dry and looked good! The white mac is perfect. I love the hidden zip and the buttons are not sewn on so no risk of losing them! I love the stretch material and it looks so sophisticated. Very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend it!

  36. Susan G

Having purchased the parka last year and loved it, I decided to invest in a Mac which I’m sure will become as valuable addition to my wardrobe. I was a bit unsure about buying ‘white’ – though I loved the look of the ‘atmosphere’ wear end mac, however, its actually a very soft, warm, creamy white and very flattering on. There are a lot of macs available in the stores just now but the protected species mac does feel that bit more special. The stretch and the feel of the fabric and the lining set these jackets apart in terms of comfort and practicality – I often roll my parka into a bag ready to whip it out when I need it and it looks just as good. In terms of sizing I usually wear a uk 12-14 and I felt the size 3 was the best fit for me. I would definitely recommend Protected Species as a good investment buy – if it’s going to rain we might as well look good!

  37. Lynn Gatherer

Beautiful classic coat that feels luxurious to wear.

  38. Sadie (verified owner)

My West End Mac has been my best buy for 2014. I bought it at the beginning of the year and it has been my ‘go to’ coat for Spring, Summer & Autumn. It looks great with everything. Smart enough for meetings, light enough for travel. Keeps the rain off and looks just as good with jeans – love, love love

  39. Judy

I love my West End mac! It’s very smartly cut and thoughtfully designed, as beautiful as any high-end designer trench coat – but far better when bad weather strikes. I especially love how versatile it is, with a belt that can be tied up in back or cinched round your waist, buttons that can be done up or left open, and removable hood. It looks great and is ready for anything!

  40. Susan Crawford

My husband bought me my West End mac and I absolutely love it. It’s smart and stylish and has a lovely belt which cinches in your waist. It’s very practical and means I no longer need to use an umbrella which is great. I can dress it up or down with jeans and smart boots or trainers and I wear it to work a lot.

  41. Jenny

I am so chuffed with my trench coat….feels amazing on, looks fab and has had many admirers already! Certified that its waterproof too!

  42. Julie

Mac arrived yesterday and got well tested today with wild wind and rain. It passed with flying colours, I am really impressed that it looks smart for office wear but keeps the rain off for the cycle to the station.

  43. Mary

Can’t believe how light this coat is. Great fit, love the styling. Fabulous idea to have a detachable hood. Really waterproof, just what you need for our weather!

  44. Laura (verified owner)

Beautiful fit, gorgeous fabric, truly wonderful Mac. Like they say – bring on the rain, I can’t wait!

Product Care

We recommend using Grangers products with our garments. They are a brand, like ourselves, dedicated to keeping you dry no matter what the weather. As a technical garment, your Protected Species jacket will need a bit more TLC than your regular clothes. Using the recommended products will keep your jacket performing well and ensure longevity of your Protected Species garments. (Note – regular washing powder can affect waterproofing and repellency)

Grangers Performance Wash is what we recommend for washing our garments as well as preparing them for reproofing. Performance wash will clean, remove odours, optimise breathability, and maintain existing water-repellency. It also provides all garments with a clean, residue-free base for optimal re-proofing.

Grangers Performance Wash is designed to work at 30°C (86°F). Simply place the product in the washing machine’s drawer before washing. Ensure the drawer is free from detergent residue. Afterwards, drip-dry your Protected Species garment (don’t tumble dry) – it will look as good as new once dry.

Click here to watch a short video on how to use.

All waterproof jackets need reproofing from time-to-time as DWR coatings wear off with day-to-day use as well as washing. You will know to reproof when the fabric on your Protected Species starts to “wet-out” and the water doesn’t roll off it so easily. Note – this doesn’t affect the waterproofing. We recommend Grangers Clothing Repel on our waterproof garments. This is a fluorocarbon-free wash-in waterproofer to replenish the durable water-repellent finish on your jacket. The product will also enhance breathability. Grangers Clothing Repel is designed to work at 30°C (86°F). Simply place the product in the washing machine’s drawer before washing (ensuring the drawer is free from detergent residue). Grangers Clothing Repel does not require heat activation therefore garments can be drip dryed (don’t tumble dry your Protected Species jacket). Ensure garments are completely dry before use.
