The best trench coat is literally a lifelong companion. It’s a core wardrobe item that’s always ready when you need it but quite accepting in being packed away for a few months until the weather changes. However, here in the UK a waterproof trench coat is a pretty much 24/7 essential as the timeless and season-less nature of this cut, combined with the consistent rainy days which are increasingly present, means this piece could have a very low cost per wear.
It took me a long time many years ago to find what I thought was my perfect trench. Having a slightly “tree-like” shape with no waistline meant that a tie anywhere near my waist was a complete no, no across any clothing product category. However, there are certain items of clothing which just can’t be substituted for other items and being outside, travelling around the world, needing to look reasonably smart, meant that compromising on this piece was not an option. My first trench coat was bought many years ago in a sale from Jigsaw. The over-sized nature of this find may not have been in-line with the trends at the time but it meant I could create a virtual waist-line with a volume of fabric which gathered at the waist. Luckily the strongest trend in 2024 is the over-sized look so we can all now look contemporary and create a waist-line at the same time. Obviously, the Jigsaw pieces has been swapped for our own Protected Species trench coat (why compromise on style or high-performance weather protection) and is pretty much slung over everything I choose from my wardrobe, regardless of business or pleasure, and transfers me into someone who actually looks smart.
Given the unpredictable weather we are seeing in the UK of late, it isn’t surprising that designers, fashion influencers, celebrities, editors, and high-street brands are all still embracing this versatile outerwear style. Don’t just take my word for it. Trench coats are poised to be a must-have item for 2024. Searches for “women’s trench coat” and, interestingly, “black trench coat women” have surged by over 100% over the past five years reaching an all-time high in the UK – so we’re not the only people who have a penchant for this cut in what is a relatively un-traditional trench coat colour. The below offers you a selection of women’s black trench coats on the high street currently (obviously including our own) and the features and shapes we think should be considered before you take the plunge on what could be something you have in your wardrobe for many, many years to come.
Key features to consider when choosing your waterproof trench coat
I know it sounds obvious but no two trench coats are the same, as you navigate the quest for the ideal trench raincoat for women, there are several key features that are good to consider
Double-Breasted or Single-Breasted Front:
Traditionally, trench coats used to have a double-breasted design with two rows of buttons. This was all to do with the critical issue that the fabrics used to create these garments weren’t actually waterproof! The two layers of fabrics crossing over each other created a barrier for the rain but as modern fabrics have developed, this increased weight is no longer needed unless you prefer the more traditional look.
Epaulets:
Again, another design feature which has its roots in historical function. Now only decorative shoulder straps that can button down, were originally used for military insignia and are no longer needed.
Belted Waist:
A belt at the waist to cinch and define the silhouette. The Protected Species example below also comes with a stud security system hidden under the back-belt loop to avoid suddenly becoming un-useable having left the tube with your belt on its way to the next station
Storm Flap:
An extra piece of fabric on the back or front designed to prevent rain from seeping through. Again, this feature adds quite a bit of weight and as a traditional design feature which was compensating for fabrics which weren’t waterproof, this is a feature that’s no longer really essential
Water-Resistant versus Waterproof Fabric:
Traditionally made from gabardine, most Trench coats on the market are water resistant at best. This is no problem if you are looking for a fashion piece over a weather protective functional item and it means you have a wide choice of fabrics from leather to Cottons to choose from. The Protected Species collection of waterproof trenches are just that, 100% waterproof using a micro-porous membrane which creates a barrier to water whilst still allowing your body to breathe. Fully seam-sealed seams and a fully adjustable removable hood are essentials to complete the technicalities of this piece for full weather protection.
Lined Interior:
A few pieces on the market have a heavier, warmer lining which can help increase the wear of your coat into the winter months.
Large Collar and Lapels:
Wide collar and lapels were originally designed so that they can be turned up to protect the neck from wind and rain and are still a useful feature to this day
Deep Pockets:
Functional, spacious pockets for carrying essentials. Look for pieces with buttoned or zipped pockets which can stow your belonging safely when you’re on your travels
Back Vent:
A vent in the back for ease of movement and comfort comes as standard with most trench coats but do a double check on this feature to ensure no annoying restriction in your stride
Adjustable Cuffs:
Straps or buckles at the wrists to tighten the cuffs and prevent water from entering are a good idea and they can also lend themselves to shortening the sleeve whenever needed.
Current trends for black trench coats for women include a mix of classic styles with modern twists and versatile styling options.
Over-sized fits:
These are here to stay! Relaxed and luxuriously large fits offer a really contemporary laid-back look which still exudes the elegance this piece is associated with.
Minimalist designs deliver a clean understated look which paired with your favourite trainers and wide leg trousers creates a contemporary put together but relaxed look.
Cropped Trench Coats:
Shorter lengths that hit above the knee are trending, offering a fresh, youthful take on the traditional trench.
Leather and Faux Leather:
Black trench coats in leather or faux leather add an urban vibe to this classic piece. Not really about weather protection or timeless appeal, but a statement for the season which will attract attention on the pavements.
Belted and Cinched Waists:
Emphasis on the waist with statement belts or cinched designs to create a flattering, hourglass shape.
Statement Buttons and Hardware:
Unique, oversized, or contrasting buttons and hardware add a touch of personality and modern flair.
Textured Fabrics:
Incorporating materials like satin, velvet, or crinkled fabrics for a rich, tactile element.
Layered Looks:
Black trench coats styled over oversized blazers, hoodies, or chunky knits for a layered, dimensional outfit.
Pairing with Casual Wear:
Mixing trench coats with casual items like jeans, sneakers, and t-shirts for an effortless, everyday look.
Monochromatic Ensembles:
Wearing a black trench coat as part of an all-black outfit for a sleek, sophisticated appearance.
Contrasting Linings:
Trench coats with colourful or patterned linings that add a pop of surprise when the coat is open or when the sleeves are rolled up.
Asymmetrical and Draped Styles:
Modern interpretations with asymmetrical cuts, draped fabrics, or unexpected silhouettes.
